Loco Daze History

Early in 1965, a small committee of community residents met to put together a celebration – intended to be annual – to celebrate the history of Dilworth. Being a railroad town, the name of the celebration became Loco Daze. It was celebrated on August 14 & 15, 1965 and included a parade, beef barbecue, water fights between neighboring fire departments and the Dilworth Volunteer Fire Department, Legion baseball games and peewee baseball games. In addition, there were Model Boy Scout Encampments, Steam Locomotive Rides, a crazy hat contest for women only – with the winner being crowned Queen of Loco Daze. A greased pig and turkey catch also was on the schedule of events.

Although the intentions were honorable to be an annual event, it would be another 10 years, 1975, when the Jaycees and the Mrs. Jaycee’s decided to give it another try. According to Pat Coalwell, who was one of the charter members of the Mrs. Jaycee’s, some of the events held were: the parade, street dance, softball games, lunches served by the church, and water fights between fire departments. There was also a “Miss Dilworth” Pageant held in the high school gym. Unfortunately, the Jaycee’s group dissolved and the festival was only held twice.

In 1987, a group of citizens led by Bernice Miller, gathered up more resolve and forged ahead. This time it did become an annual event. Events over the years have included ping pong drop from an airplane, youth parade, Loco Daze parade, variety shows, pet shows, carnivals, beach volleyball tournaments, water fights, youth dances, adult dances, ecumenical church services, tennis tournaments, spaghetti feeds, clown acts and many more too numerous to mention.

A hearty thanks goes out to Bernice for her leadership. Other committee members in 1987 included Dave Lamb, Mike Griffin, Mike Jacklovich, Shirley Griffin, and Jerry Anderson. Bernice was chairperson for two years, then handed the duties to Jerry Anderson in 1989. In 1999, Jerry stepped down from the chairmanship and Jim McLaughlin assumed the position of Chairman of Loco Daze. One very important committee member who has been on the committee since at least 1989 is Rick Cariveau. Rick as been invaluable with his input.

Loco Daze has developed into a vibrant community celebration that brings back former residents and alumni. Many class reunions are specifically planned for Loco Daze. The Loco Daze Committee is appreciative of the response of the community to help make our celebration grow. The Loco Daze schedule of events is in the folder. Check it out and participate whenever there is an event that you enjoy. If you have an event that could be added to the schedule, be sure to contact one of the committee members. The Loco Daze Committee is also always looking for new members!
